FRANCE - DIRECTOIRE - 5 FRANCS in the size of the UNION ET FORCE shield (G 563).
SILVER - YEAR 7 Q (Perpignan workshop), very low mintage of 615,774 pieces. TTB -
This coin, by engraver Augustin Dupré, depicts Hercules wearing the skin of the Nemean lion and armed with a club, with "La République" on his right, holding a pike and wearing a Phrygian cap, and "La Justice" on his left, holding a triangular level. The motto "Union et Force" was replaced in 1848 by "Liberté-Egalité-Fraternité".
This first issue is historic. It was the first time that the application of the new metric system defined the characteristics of the currency, giving it the name of franc for a value of 5 grams of 900-thousandths silver (5 francs = 25 grams).
