"THIONVILLE AND ITS SURROUNDINGS IN WAR 1939-1945".
Thionville, Moselle's 2nd-largest city, a garrison town as well as a rail hub and industrial crossroads, is located at the gateway to France, some twenty kilometers from the German border.
This location gave Thionville a special role during the war: as the headquarters of a fortified sector, Thionville was evacuated during the German invasion. Annexed and renamed GROS DIEDENHOFEN, it encompassed the surrounding communes of Beuvange, Florange, Manom, Terville, Uckange, Volrange, Yutz... For 4 long years, it stood at Germany's doorstep, suffering the horrors of the Nazis. Then Thionville was liberated by the Americans, although they were held up on the left bank for 2 months by the Moselle in flood. After the liberation, the town once again found itself on the front line, under bombardment.
This book illustrates Thionville's tormented wartime history through over 200 period documents: photos, postcards, propaganda and administrative prints.
