HYDROPLANES (*) - 1907 1908
3 captioned close-up postcards:
- 1907 Santos Dumont at the wheel of his hydroplane n° 18 - JH 966 - front close-up of the aircraft on the Seine.
- 1907 Santos Dumont's hydroplane n° 18 before launching - 3/4 profile close-up of the aircraft - JA 965
- 1908 - Italian hydroplane Forlanini on Lake Maggiore "must reach 125 km per hour" JH 982 - very close-up of this curious 2-propeller aircraft with pilot and mechanics.
(*) Hydroplane: ancestor of the hydrofoil, attempts to create a shallow-draft craft propelled by one or two aerial propellers. In 1907 Alberto Santos Dumont tested his "gliding hull" at high speed on the Seine, and in 1928 Gabriel Voisin sailed up the Rhône from Lyon to Aix-les-Bains on Lac du Bourget - by 1930, hydrofoils had become a credible alternative to motorboats.
