( * ) - SATIRIQUES NAPOLEON III - violent anti-emperor sentiment emerged in the wake of defeat. On September 4, 1870, Napoleon III was deposed and a Government of National Defense was set up. Numerous coins - the best propaganda medium in circulation - appeared, reengraved by anonymous artists to ridicule the deposed emperor and blame him for the defeat and the 80,000 French prisoners. The emperor appeared wearing a Prussian helmet, the imperial eagle transformed into an owl and so on...
