1956 - NECESSITY / RATIONING - SUEZ CANAL CRISIS. COLLECTION - Lot 585
1956 - NECESSITY / RATIONING - SUEZ CANAL CRISIS. COLLECTION of 8 RATIONING VOUCHERS Suez Canal.
On July 26, 1956, Egyptian President Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal operated by the French and British. On November 29, France and Britain decided on military intervention and seized the canal zone. Faced with the shock of international opinion - the United States and the USSR - the Franco-British troops had to withdraw.
With the Egyptians blocking the canal and the Syrians cutting the IRAQ PETROLEUM COMPANY pipeline, most of Europe's oil supplies were cut off. France, which had no supplies, introduced a rationing system on November 29, 1956; fuel could only be obtained by presenting vouchers.
This system lasted only 8 months, until July 1957.
New vouchers, some rare, security printing on watermarked paper.
