MARINE NATIONALE - LARGE PHOTO (circa 1940) - CUIRASSE RICHE - Lot 779
MARINE NATIONALE - LARGE PHOTO (circa 1940) - CUIRASSE RICHELIEU. 23 x 29.5 cm - aerial view at sea of the whole ship turning. RICHELIEU: historic ship and one of the flagships of the French Navy, built at the BREST arsenal and launched on January 17, 1939, named in honor of the Cardinal for his founding role in the French navy in the 17th century. Escaped from Brest in June 1940, so as not to be seized by the Germans, she was engaged by the Vichy authorities against the English at Dakar, where she was torpedoed on July 8, 1940. Repaired, she joined the Allies in December 1942. Modernized in the USA in 1943, she was assigned to the Indian Ocean in 1944/45, under British command, and took part in the fight against Japanese forces. Recovered by France, she took part in the return of French troops to Indochina. Decommissioned in 1967, demolished in 1968.
