NAPOLEONIDE - OCCUPATION of BARCELONA by the FRENCH TROOPS. - Lot 436
NAPOLEONIDE - OCCUPATION of BARCELONA by the FRENCH TROOPS. 4 QUARTOS 1813 - value and flower in the center, "en barcelona" around the edge. Reverse: stylized coat of arms in center between 2 leaf stems - TTB note: the town was occupied by French troops as early as February 12, 1808. By seizing the crown, the Emperor's brother, Joseph Napoleon, provoked a general insurrection. The isolation of the French and the necessities of war increased the need for coinage and the opening of a mint in Barcelona. Coinage began on August 27, 1808 and continued until May 30, 1814.
