( * ) - this nail factory belonged to Samuel GUPPY. In 1796, he invented a machine for cutting, sucking and finishing nails. His great innovation was to invent a barbed copper nail for fastening copper cladding to the wooden hulls of ships. A considerable patent at the time, it was bought by the British government, which ensured its maritime supremacy, particularly against France and Spain. This token, which could be exchanged for the national currency, was created to compensate for the shortage of foreign currency, and was used to pay personnel.
