SILVER - FRANCE - PRIMARY SCHOOL CERTIFICATE - NOGENT SCHOOL - Lot 345
SILVER - FRANCE - PRIMARY SCHOOL CERTIFICATE - NOGENT SCHOOL (Oise).
RARE silver medal, round 35 mm, 17.95 grams, antique lamp hallmark.
Attributed to BOUVIER Georges within a wreath of olive leaves.
On the reverse, between 2 olive-leaf palms, "Certificat d' études 1880".
SUP in its original wood/velvet/green pega case.
It was only on August 20, 1866 that Victor Duruy created a real diploma to be awarded to school-leavers under the name of "certificat d' études primaires".
The certificate was conceived as a reward designed to stimulate pupils by creating emulation between them, and to "overcome the indifference of parents".
The examination was to be conducted by the schoolteacher, with the support of the mayor and parish priest.
It took the form of a cantonal competition. A prize was awarded to the first on the list of successful candidates... girls were not admitted... - (www.le-temps-des-instituteurs.fr).
