MONETARY WEIGHTS or DENERALS: objects steeped in history, created to facilitate the work of moneychangers, bankers and merchants. Each weight represents the exact mass of a coin circulating throughout Europe, and the pendulum is used to check its integrity (that it has not been trimmed, counterfeited, etc.). These weights, bearing numerical indications and symbols of state authority, were minted in a highly controlled manner by the royal services, regularly checked by a sworn "juré" who affixed his hallmark.
