Letter dated 5 fructidor AN 7 (August 22, 1799) to citoyen GENDRON unofficial defender*, place de la Loy in ANGERS - Plea. Mention "franche" à la pen et très petite marque postale frappe en noire "P.47.P / SAUMUR" 7 mm x 18 mm (Grégoire et Passini n°10). *OFFICIAL DEFENDERS: to bring justice closer to the nation, the Constituent Assembly authorized citizens to defend others in court. These men, who were to replace the lawyers whose function had been abolished at the start of the revolution, were invested with the trust of the parties, and were required to defend the friend without financial compensation.
