2nd WORLD WAR - "Witness to history" letter. Letter with 30c red MERCURE franking from ST SOUPLET SUR PY (Marne) to SAINT MARS LA JAILLE (Loire Inférieure) - Postmark on "ST SOUPLET S/ PY" POST OFFICE stamp + date handwritten in ink 15-8-40. Arrival stamp "ST MARS LA JAILLE" 21-8-40. Note: "Drôle de Guerre"; following the German invasion, on returning from the exodus, some looted post offices noticed that their date stamps had disappeared - collectors had to make up for this by various methods - ST SOUPLET used the office claw and carried the date of deposit on the pen-and-ink stamp.
