Kru / Oubi mask, Ivory Coast - Lot 140
Kru / Oubi mask, Ivory Coast
Protruding tubular pupils, indicating divination skills, and a gaping, pouting mouth distinguish the face of this Kru , or Krou , mask, topped by a fan-shaped crest. Tiny zoomorphic ears stand out on either side of the headdress. The grainy beige patina is enhanced by polychrome touches.
52 x 24 cm
Sold without base
The Kru are divided into twenty-four sub-groups, including the Grebo, who live in southern Liberia and southwestern Côte d'Ivoire. Their leader is the reclusive Bodio. Unlike most West African populations, they are not subject to the Poro society. Their tubular masks are said to be of Obi origin, and may symbolize the mythical creatures that inhabit the forests on the banks of the Cavally, and to whom the people address themselves in ritual ceremonies. The interest of cubist painters and modern sculptors in the abstract forms of the Grebo mask can be seen in some of their works, such as Picasso's metal guitar of 1914. source: "Trésors de Côte d'Ivoire.
