Nowadays, it takes part in peaceful and festive ceremonies. The Western Pende live on the banks of the Kwilu, while the Eastern Pende have settled on the banks of the Kasai downstream from Tshikapa. The influences of neighboring ethnic groups - Mbla, Suku, Wongo, Leele, Kuba and Salempasu - have left their mark on their extensive tribal art sculpture. Initiation and power masks, known as minganji , represent the ancestors and are performed successively during the same ceremonies, such as agricultural festivals, initiation and circumcision rituals (mukanda) and the enthronement of the chief.
