Montol female figure, Nigeria - Lot 46
Montol female figure, Nigeria In an arched posture, this African female statue rests on high "Z"-shaped legs, while the rounded bust projects the chest forward. A long neck supports a head notched with deep circular ears and topped with a crest. A powerful, straight nose accentuates the seriousness of the physiognomy. The Goemai, Tarok (who call their healing society Kwompten) and Ngas of central Nigeria use similar statues, often more schematic. Dark velvety patina, cracks and abrasions. 38 x 10 cm For members of the Komtin male society, this type of sculpture played a major role in healing rites, or in divining the origins of illnesses. The Montols kept sculptures for communal use in their "dodos", thatched huts decorated with trophy skulls, where they were used in worship following ritual libations.
